Vegan Navigation In A Carnivore World
The holiday season approaching, invitations to events with mouthwatering spreads of food will be commonplace. Skillfully carved turkey, tender cuts of roast, & beautifully decorated ham will be the focal point of many gatherings. Grab your GPS systems and let me help you navigate through these shark infested waters, because baby, when you mention that you don’t eat meat, people gasp and act as if you just confessed to a crime. Here are some tips to keep you on track in the event that roasted broccoli is not on the dinner menu.
1. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD
I am the queen of showing up to BBQs, events, or even restaurants with a Tupperware full of plants. If you are too embarrassed to carry your food in Tupperware, buy some to-go plates from your local store or order from Amazon. The DollarTree sells them 10 for a $1. To-go plates have the psychological effect of tricking your brain into thinking you are eating restaurant style meals and it helps you to not feel left out.
2. RESEARCH MENUS
If your non-plant eating friends want to hang out and you don’t want to be left out, research restaurant menus before you go. Most restaurants now have their menus available online. If they don’t have vegan options per se, you can piece together a meal with side dishes. If all else fails, refer to tip #1 and bring your own food. I’ve done this numerous times before. Just tell the waitress that you researched the menu before you came & they do not cater to your lifestyle. Make sure you order a drink and leave a tip.
3. SPEAK WITH THE KITCHEN, HOST, OR CHEF
Ask if they would be willing to cook/have some vegan options prepared for you. Once people not only know, but respect your lifestyle choices, chances are they would be willing to provide something so that you will feel included. No host wants to look amongst their party and see someone either not eating or not enjoying the food. SPEAK UP!!! It doesn’t hurt to ask.
4. EAT BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
I know that we have been socially programmed to come together and eat at every event. I challenge that narrative by saying that you can go out , socialize, and have a good time without eating a thing. If you are satiated before you leave home, you are less likely to be hangry or make poor decisions.
5. BE PATIENT
Veganism is on the rise and large corporations have taken notice. It’s not a “niche” food anymore, it has become a movement. According to statistics, between 2014-2017, people who identify as vegan rose 600%! It won’t be long before plant-based options will be in mainstream markets. Until then, stay the course for your health and wellness.
