Protein…It’s What’s For Dinner!
Out of the 7 major nutrients, this one seems to be the only one that becomes a source of discussion for newly licensed nutritionist from Google University & Social Media State College. You guessed it….PROTEIN. Today, my objective is to finally lay to rest the question that evokes deep sighs and eye rolls from plant-based prophets on a global scale…and that is, “Where do you get your protein from?”
Can I ask a question? Do you really care about an individuals protein intake or are you just looking to argue your opinion in regards to the push back against the construct of societal norms? So since you don’t truly understand it, you negate its validity by beating a dead horse.
Class is now in session, because some of you guys need a refresher course. Turn your Biology 101 textbooks to the chapter on protein and it reads, “Protein is a macronutrient that is essential to building muscle mass. Although it’s commonly found in animal products, it is also present in nuts, legumes, and vegetables. There are 9 amino acids (the building blocks of protein) that your body doesn’t produce on its own so you can get these amino acids from quinoa, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and soy. Pepsin is a digestive enzyme that breaks down plant proteins into amino acids so that the body can absorb them. 10-35% of daily calories should come from protein but this number varies depending on age, sex, and level of physical activity.”
It is very uncommon in a Western society for an individual to be protein deficient. When was the last time you visited a loved one in the hospital because they were lacking protein? The most severe form of protein deficiency is called kwashiorkor. If you are concerned, here are 8 signs that your body needs more protein
Edema
Fatty liver
Skin, hair, & nail problems
Loss of muscle mass
Bone fractures
Stunted growth in children
Weakened immune system
Increased appetite
So now that you’ve been re- educated and informed, please stop asking people how they get their protein. I know personally, nobody asked me about my protein intake when I was tipping the scales at nearly 300 lbs, so keep those same lips closed now (periodt!) Like, comment, and share if you care. #toodles
